Day 12: Pokemon and more

I grew up with Pokemon and I love the franchise. I still watch the show and love going to see the movies. I was never a big gamer, but I do play Pokemon go! its a lot of fun to play with my sister and I love asking people who there favorite Pokemon are. Pokemon is very similar to Disney to me. Both franchises have characters that are beloved and have compelling stories that are loved by people of all ages. I also cannot wait for Detective Pikachu to come out, I hope it will be good! I was never one for straight up horror anime, but I enjoyed looking at the illustrations. They are very uncanny, but have a life and movement to them. I enjoy series that have a dark or horror element, but I like ones with an overall story or other genres on top of it, like Madoka Magica or Death Parade. I definitely want to read his cat book!

Day 4: I Saw It

Question for Scholar: 1) What would you say is the most influential Manga/Anime you have seen / your personal favorite? 2) Is there any Manga/Anime that you would recommend? When reading this in class I immediately recognized it from the Literature of Comics class. I remember watching the film adaptation you showed in class and being horrifies and greatly saddened by what I saw. When rereading the comic, the artistic interpretation of the victims is just as haunting. I will say that I did find the film to be a bit more striking to me as a viewer for the added screams and the visuals of people literally melting away and falling apart struck me harder than the comic. Day 3: Cigarette Girl

Cigarette girl was an  interesting read. I was not expecting for it to be multiple Slice of Life stories instead of being one over arcing story. When reading, each story felt as if it could have happened. Overall I did not relate much to the stories, I think the one I enjoyed the most was the first story, 'Naruko Tsurumaki's Love". This one I actually related a bit too since they found that stray dog and ended up keeping him. My family and I ended up keeping 4 stray kittens we found under the engine of my car a couple of months ago and this reminded me of this. I liked how he believed that his mother would have kicked the dog out, but ended up making a little place for him. Originally we wanted to find homes for the kittens, but my parents ended up keeping them. The rest of the short stories were overall just depressing for me for none really got a happy ending. The melancholy tone of the stories paralleled the loneliness of the characters. I did not mind reading this mang

Day 7: Garden of Words

In the film, there is a strong use of visuals, especially with the rain. This gives the environment almost a magical, other worldly feel that one can not express as well in live action. There is immense detail given to the environment and to the symbolic elements of the film. Shoes play an important part. Yukino, we would see every shoe that she wore through his eyes. Compared to American animation, the details in the background make the background an extremely important part of the film verses American where often this is to help the characters stand out. There is a much slower pace, living in the moment parts in this film that really slows down the narrative in comparison to American films. Compared to Ghibli, a lot of the moments played a lot on the emotions of the characters much like Ghibli does. Depending on the emotions of the characters, the rain would change.
