Day 5: Romance

Princess Jellyfish, Ouran Host Club, and Chihayafuru Chihaya are the three manga I decided to read this week. For all of these, I had watched and loved the anime adaptions. Ouran Host Club is personally one of my favorite anime of all time. This was one that I saw around the 8th grade and I loved the comedy and the overall twist on the 'Senpai' love story. Without realizing it at the time, this was a pretty progressive story. Haruhi crossdresses, kisses a girl, has a crossdressing dad, the twins portray 'boys love' and more, and whats great about this is that no one questions these characters in any way. When the boys meet Haruhi's dad, they are not even that shocked to see him dressed as a women, they just say 'ah so he crossdresses' and go and introduce themselves.

Princess Jellyfish is another work that I truly loved and watch as it was releasing each week and was sad that they did not continue the story in the manga. The characters are so lively and they take the subject of a crossdressing man differently than Ouran. The main girl, Tsukimi, meets Kuranosuke and believes he is a beautiful, fashionable woman but then finds out that she is a he. Yes she freaks out, but does not hate him or get offended in anyway for she is just scared that her 'men hating' roommates will find out. I loved seeing such an interesting group of characters and see how these events would pan out.

Chihayafuru Chihaya is another anime that I had watched as each episode was released in the US. I loved this series funnily enough not for the romance, but for learning about the game. My favorite part was the battle between Shinobu and Chihaya. I found both characters fascinating and wanted to know more about Shinobu. When we are finally introduced to Shinobu, we see how good she is at the game and see why she is the current Queen. We see how fast she beats her opponent and then Chihaya wants to face her and the readers want to see this too. This dynamic was by far was my favorite aspect of this manga.\

I greatly enjoyed the series for you feel that you are experiencing the story along with protagonist who is also an outsider to farm culture. Day 4: I Saw It

Question for Scholar: 1) What would you say is the most influential Manga/Anime you have seen / your personal favorite? 2) Is there any Manga/Anime that you would recommend? When reading this in class I immediately recognized it from the Literature of Comics class. I remember watching the film adaptation you showed in class and being horrifies and greatly saddened by what I saw. When rereading the comic, the artistic interpretation of the victims is just as haunting. I will say that I did find the film to be a bit more striking to me as a viewer for the added screams and the visuals of people literally melting away and falling apart struck me harder than the comic. Saying that, the comic certainly does its job in having the viewer catch a glimpse of what Keiji went through during the bomb. Day 2: Experience of Ayako

The Evolution/Adaption of Magical Girl Trope Kill la Kill / Panty Stocking My experience reading Ayako was an good one. I read it online, which I prefer for I enjoy being able to zoom in on pictures and easier to read on my laptop. This is usually how I read manga for there are not many manga shops near where I lived. I was surprised by the overall atmosphere of the story. It was definitely a page turner for the the pace of the novel was quite fast. There were really no characters that I really liked or rooted for, the overall story is just depressing. I felt bad for Ayako, being imprisoned and thus having no social skills one she grows up. I really enjoyed the overall style of the manga, some pages I would just study the drawings, especially the landscapes.
